The Meher Hair Chain drapes across the back of open hair in soft, weighted swags — fine chain strung with imitation pearls and crystal, falling in layers that follow the curve of the head and catch light with every turn. It is closer to jewellery worn in the hair than to a hair accessory: there is no clip pretending to be decorative, just the drape itself.

In silver, cool and crystalline against dark hair. In gold, warmer, softer, and quieter against the same.

How to wear it

• Over open hair. The way it is meant to be worn — blow-dried or softly waved, so the layers sit against movement rather than flat hair.
• With a half-up. Secure the crown, let the rest fall, and set the chain just below the section line so the drape reads as deliberate.
• Around a low bun or chignon. Wrap the layers around the bun instead of letting them fall — a sharper, more architectural version of the same piece.

Style it with

• An off-shoulder or backless gown — the piece and the neckline are looking at the same empty space, so let one of them win.
• A saree with a plain blouse and open hair. Nothing about a hair chain is only western; on a silk saree it reads modern rather than borrowed.
• A lehenga or a structured co-ord for a reception, where the back of the head faces the room for most of the evening.

Care

Multi-strand pieces tangle if you let them. Lay it flat rather than folding it, store it on its own, and lift it by the fastenings rather than the chain. Put it on last, after hair spray has fully dried — product residue dulls both the crystal and the pearl coating faster than anything else. Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth after wear.

Will it slip out during an evening?

You can attach one to two bobby pins to secure it well along with the comb attachment

Is it heavy to wear?

It weighs about 45 g — not featherlight, and we would rather tell you that than have it surprise you. What makes it wearable is that the weight is spread across the width of the head and carried at separate points, so no single spot takes the load. Most people stop noticing it within the first half hour. If you have very fine hair, anchor the fastenings into a small backcombed section rather than into loose strands.

Are the pearls real?

No — these are imitation pearls set on alloy chain, which is what lets a piece this elaborate sit at this price. We would rather say so plainly than let you find out later. Treat them as you would any imitation pearl: keep them away from perfume, hair spray and water, and the coating stays as it arrived.

Does it work on short or fine hair?

Depends on width and drop but not suitable for verry short hair. Once those are in: "The piece spans X inches across and drops Y at its longest, so on hair shorter than roughly shoulder length the lower layers will fall past the hair rather than against it. On fine hair it works best over a soft blow-dry, which gives the layers something to rest on."

Silver or gold — how do I choose?

Silver reads cooler and sharper, and the crystal has more contrast against dark hair. Gold is warmer and softer, and disappears into brown and chestnut tones more gently. If your outfit is ivory, pastel, silver-worked or cool-toned, take silver. If it is red, maroon, rust, gold-worked or festive, take gold. If you are undecided, choose the one that matches the rest of the jewellery you already own.

Can I wear this with a saree or lehenga?

Yes, and it is one of the better reasons to own it. A hair chain worn with open hair and a silk saree reads as a styling decision rather than a costume — which is a very different effect from a conventional hair ornament. For a lehenga, wrap it around a low bun instead of letting it drape.

Can a bride wear this, or is it for guests?

Both, depending on the wedding. It works as a bridal piece for a court, Christian or reception look where the hair is worn open, and equally as a bridesmaid or wedding-guest piece. It is not built to compete with heavy traditional bridal headwear, and it is not trying to.

How do I stop the layers tangling in storage?

Lay it flat and store it alone — never folded into a pouch with other jewellery. Multi-strand pieces knot when the layers are allowed to cross. If it does tangle, work it loose from the fastenings outwards rather than pulling the strands apart.
